Farmer Ferrers Diary April 2006
This month has been busy. We had some schools in from South Woodham celebrating Woodham School's day and enjoy their free day out at the Farm. The schools in South Woodham are invited to spend a day at Marsh Farm in return for advertising our events by handing out flyers to families at their school. The lovely warm weather meant the children had a super day and enjoyed their tractor and trailer ride, petting a rabbit, guinea pig or ferret and getting close to sheep, pigs and cattle.
Also Marsh Farm Staff have been visiting schools in South Woodham for the annual Plant to Plate project. The project aims to encourage children to eat more healthily and learn about where there food comes from. One class from each local Woodham school will sow seeds to grow a cereal, oil and lots of vegetables. The children then visit Marsh Farm in April to plant the seedlings and then again in July to harvest, cook and taste their crops. The first stage involved children planting wheat and onion seeds and preparing (chitting) the potatoes in egg boxes. The children will now nurture the seedlings in their classrooms until they visit the farm in April.
Over the Easter Weekend in April we will be hunting for eggs on the Farm. There will be lots of exciting things to do and see at the farm. If we are lucky and we have been good the Easter Bunny may be down to visit. He called me the other day to see if we could find him a nice warm home for the weekend so he could visit so we are keeping our fingers crossed that he will be able to make it. Whilst he is visiting we will have lots of fun things for you to do, like the tractor and trailer ride, the driving schools, you can meet real bunnies in the petting barn and you can see the lambs growing fast in their fields. There is always so much to do at the farm I am surprised I managed to fit it all in. One thing I will do is visit the craft room in the cow shed to make sure I make a little something to show everyone. I always like it in there; I once managed to get my fingers covered in glitter trying to stick on a nose for my Easter bunny.
As always I like to put a spring in everyone's step, on Saturday the 1st April our Country Park ranger has organised a Spring Walk in the Country Park. The walk takes place from 10.00am to 12.00noon and costs £2.00 for adults and £1.50 for children (aged between 3 and 16). Booking and pre-payment is essential, please telephone 01245 321552 to book your place. So come along to explore and find out about the signs of spring.
Well that's it for now, remember to come and visit me soon.
