Farmer Ferrers Diary March 2006

Hello there once again,

Hopefully by now you would have come and visited my farm. We are now fully open and we have been really busy. The opening weekend we had over 500 people visit us at Marsh Farm, they saw the baby lambs, newly born goats, our seven calves and lots of baby piglets.

My competition 'Name the Kids' is going very well. I have had loads of entries and they are all really good suggestions, my farm staff is going to have fun picking a winner. The winner of the competition will be able to come and visit the goats and have a picture taken with them.

Many people have been enjoying the newly refurbished tea room; the new menu leaves your mouth watering and your taste buds wanting more. I have spent many lunch times in there tasting the Marsh Farm meat and other local produces as well as a cake or two.

Any way you may be wondering about my country walk and bird box activities that have been going on recently. We had World Wetlands Day walk around the Country Park as part of the international event celebrating wetlands and their wildlife. Also during half term week it was National Nest Box week. As part of this we held build a bird box events on the farm. Between everyone who came along we built nearly 80 nest boxes, so lots of birds will have a nice place to stay this spring.

Speaking of spring lots of wildlife will be getting active building nests and getting ready for another busy year. Out in the country park we have water voles which are small mammals that live in the ditches and dykes around the country park. I have also seen some king fishers looking around for a place to stay this year, and we have had some greater spotted woodpeckers around the farm as well. Look out for lots of wildlife when you're out and about.

Also we have a spring walk coming up, which will be a guided walk around the country park with our country park ranger looking at all the changes and signs of spring. It's on Saturday the 2nd of April, if you would like some more information or want to come along please phone to book a place. The number is 01245 321552.

So there you go I have been very busy. But I have a feeling it is going to get a lot busier. In March we are expecting to have the majority of our lambs born. So hop into your wellies and come on down to Marsh Farm on March 17th or 18th to see the newborn baby lambs.
